Heroine of The Titanic: The Real Unsinkable Molly Brown
Elaine Landau
Students may have seen the movies and think they know all about the "unsinkable" Molly Brown and/or the Titanic. This well-written nonfiction book will certainly prove them wrong! Margaret Brown was never even called "Molly" during her own lifetime. She only sailed on the Titanic because it was the next available vessel that would return her to a sick infant grandson. The book is full of details that will change how readers think about what they "think" they know. Filled with black-and-white photographs, and complete with endnotes, bibliography, index, and chronology, the title is sure to entertain readers with an interest in the woman or the ship. The focus of the book is on Margaret Brown, her family, her active role in feminism, and her philanthropy. The biography well covers the life of this American legend and social activist and dispels many commonly held misconceptions. Nonfiction (978.8 or biography). Grades 6 and up. 2001, Clarion Books, 132p, $18.00. Ages 11 up. Reviewer: Tanya Tullos (The Lorgnette - Heart of Texas Reviews (Vol. 14, No. 1).

Popcorn
Elaine Landau
Illustrated by Brian Lies
Presented in a conversational tone with humorous illustrations, this summary of the essentials of popcorn is both appealing and informative. Beginning with a pop quiz and ending with recipes for flavored popcorn, this book explains why popcorn pops, where it is grown, where it is eaten, its history, and then reveals a top secret. Popcorn is good for you! The artist's dedication to "the raccoon who raided my corn patch" adds to the delight of the book. A mischievous raccoon appears in most of the illustrations, although he is never mentioned in the text. Young children will enjoy the active pictures and words that seem to speak directly to them. Older readers will appreciate the factual information and the additional facts included in various insert formats throughout the book. A bibliography of web sites and books is included. 2003, Charlesbridge, $16.95. Ages 6 to 10. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D. (Children's Literature).
